Catch Ideas Like Fish!

Catch Ideas Like Fish!

David Lynch

You don’t create ideas, you catch them.

There is a really interesting talk by director David Lynch on his creative process that involves meditation, catching ideas and his creative process behind making a film.

Here is the link:

Types of ideas in the creative process

One of the great lessons is that ideas are always happening in our head and we just have to be aware of them and follow the path the idea is painting for us.

There are no bad ideas and certainly no original ideas.

There only are the ideas you’ve got. It’s up to you if you think if that idea is worth your time and worth pursuing.

A film in a way is like a big puzzle that is yet to be completed and our mind tosses pieces of the puzzle at us and we can make it part of the whole or leave them behind. Accordingly, we’ll end up with one image or another depending on which pieces we’ve used to make our puzzle.

Where to start in the creative process?

Some people start at the end, some people start at the beginning of the movie. Others start with an atmosphere or a place, maybe a character or simply a trait. And every way of beginning and every way of creating is fine as long as you create something with it.

In creation is not about how you get there, it’s about getting there. And not knowing how you are going to end up there is one of the most fascinating and thrilling aspects of the creative process. You have to be bold in the sense of not letting fear scare you of what your heart tells you it’s a good idea but your head tells you that it isn’t.

The part your head and intellectual side of yourself has to play is of making the most sense of what idea your heart has decided to choose. In this way, both head and heart will work together to create something bigger…

Methodology in the creative process wins

Don’t get me wrong! It is NOT a matter of luck. It is about setting up a schedule in where you compromise to pay attention to what’s going through your head and writing them down on paper or in a Word document. It is work.

Camilo José Cela, Nobel Prize winner of literature, said that he just wrote a page a day and that most of his time he would review his work. He worked for hours and hours on the same page and on what he had written before. Sure if he felt inspired would write more than a page a day by it was a must for him to make some kind of progress every day, even if it was only a page a day.

So in the end is about discipline.
